Sugar Bear - a sweet young lady who found her new home through SHF.

 Safe Harbor Farm

SHF's Dylan - sleeping on the job!

Volunteers needed!

     Additional volunteers are ALWAYS needed to help us create the animal education, adoption & activities center coastal North Carolina so desperately needs!  Got a free morning or afternoon, or two?  Weekday or weekend, it doesn't matter.  Consider helping us with one or more of the below jobs -- some physical, many not physical at all -- all very, very important in helping us get more animals the help they need.

     Volunteers are asked to commit to the completion of a particular project, or they can commit to a four or an eight hour shift one day a week for many weeks (our most cherished volunteers all started with the most mundane tasks, came back frequently and showed us they could be counted on, and now some of them are on our Board of Directors!).

  Working with the animals:
Volunteers who are interested in hands-on work with the animals can sign up for animal-oriented tasks on their second or third visit (since we want to get to know a person before we entrust our fur-kids to them.)

     Parent-child teams are welcome (kids learn so much by watching their parents give of their time and energies!).  All kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult volunteer at all times.

     How to volunteer at Safe Harbor Farm

     (1) Review the volunteer activities listed below and think of what you like to do and what you're good at;

     (2) Decide how many hours you can commit to at least once a week.

     (3) Fill out & submit our volunteer application online, then call us the following day at 252-422-6770 to schedule your first visit.

     (3) If you are under 16 years of age, be sure to list on your application which parent or family friend over 18 will be volunteering with you.

     (4) Give us a few days to call you, but call us if its been more than 3 days since you sent your application.

        Moderately physical activities:

  • helpers with basic carpentry skills to help finish our cat adoption building and build low decks for the dog pens
  • landscaping & gardening (we LOVE people who come with cuttings and transplants from home!)*
  • indoor & outdoor clean-up crews
  • soil preparation & grass planting
  • expansion of our chicken coop

        Not very physical at all:

  • help with morning (9 - 12) & evening (5-6:30) kitty feedings and/or dog walking;
  • help with PetSmart adoptathons (occasional Sundays during the warmer weather, 9 am to 7 pm);
  • cat and dog groomers (SHF's many adoptable critters would LOVE your undivided attention!)
  • transporters occasionally needed to help deliver animals to the Kindness Clinic for others (most from Carteret County needing to come to Maysville)

    A few things you can do from home*:

  • EASY!  link your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers' Food Lion MVP cards to Safe Harbor Farm.  All you need to do is compile a list of names, addresses and 12-digit MVP numbers (from the back of each MVP card) and submit it to Safe Harbor Farm via safeharborfarmadoptions@hotmail.com.  We'll securely link all numbers directly to Food Lion's computers.  It costs everyone nothing, and it doesn't affect anyone's grocery discounts!  If all of us link enough MVP cards, Food Lion will send Safe Harbor $350 each quarter to help the critters!
  • volunteers always needed to host small fundraisers (no car wash or yard sale is too small, if the proceeds can help us help the animals!)*

*  terrific family projects

      Professionals needed (even if only for a few hours here
                                                and there!):

  • painters
  • carpenters
  • dump truck operators (to get loads of free marrow dirt from Martin Marietta, just 1 1/2 miles away)
  • electricians
  • plumbers
  • veterinarians
  • vet techs
  • Please call 252-422-6770
