Sugar Bear - a sweet young lady who found her new home through SHF.

SHF's Dylan - sleeping on the job!

Volunteers needed!

     Dedicated volunteers are ALWAYS needed to help us maintain the best adoption facility for animals in coastal North Carolina!  Got a free morning or afternoon, or two, each week?  Weekday or weekend, it doesn't matter.  Consider helping us with one or more of the below jobs -- some physical, many not physical at all -- all very, very important in helping us get more animals the help they need.

     Professionals (vets, techs, carpenters & plumbers) always needed!  See below!

Volunteers are asked to commit to
the completion of a particular project,
or to a four or an eight hour shift each week

(our most cherished volunteers all started with the most mundane tasks;
they came back frequently, they showed us they could be counted on,
and some of them went on to join our Board of Directors!
).

Parent-child teams are welcome (kids learn so much by watching their parents give of their time and energies!).  All kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult volunteer at all times and be very well behaved.

     How to volunteer at Safe Harbor Farm

     (1) Review the volunteer activities listed below and think of what you like to do and what you're good at;

     (2) Decide how many hours you can commit to at least once a week.

     (3) Fill out & submit our volunteer application online, then call us the following day at 252-422-6770 to schedule your first visit.

     (4) If you are under 16 years of age, be sure to list on your application which parent or family friend over 18 will be volunteering with you.

        Moderately physical activities:

  • brush trimming along our dog walking trails (year-round, this can be fun & very rewarding)
  • landscaping & gardening (we LOVE people who come with cuttings and transplants from home!)*
  • routine lawn maintenance - cutting & weed-wacking
  • indoor & outdoor clean-up crews
  • expansion of our chicken coop
  • dog walking & treadmilling (AM & PM shifts available)

        Not very physical at all:

  • painting
  • help with morning (8:30 - 12) & evening (5:30-6:30) kitty feedings
  • help with PetSmart adoptathons (Sundays once a month, 9 - 7);
  • cat and dog groomers (SHF's many adoptable critters would LOVE your undivided attention!)
  • transporters occasionally needed to help deliver animals from high-kill municipal shelters in Duplin, Bladen and Cumberland counties to Safe Harbor Farm

    A few things you can do from home*:

  • volunteers always needed to host small fundraisers (We LOVE car washes and yard sales done to help us!)*
  • collect inkjet and laser cartridges for recycling for SHF;
  • host a paper towel drive for the shelter (its easy to do on the spur of the moment; just ask everyone in your neighborhood to contribute a roll or two while explaining how much it helps the 130+ animals at SHF!)

*  terrific family projects

   One note about working with the animals: Volunteers who are interested in hands-on work with the animals can sign up for animal-oriented tasks
on their second visit
(we want to get to know a person before we entrust our fur-kids to them.

  • electricians
  • plumbers
  • veterinarians
