The Kindness Spay-neuter Clinic
(not for profit and volunteer supported)
The
Kindness Spay-neuter Clinic's mission is to stop
taxpayer-financed euthanasia of adoptable animals
due to a lack of suitable homes
(the NUMBER ONE cause of death of cats & dogs in N.C).
In the spring and in the fall, we host vaccine clinics for
the general public, and in the spring & early summer we host
heartworm awareness clinics in Downeast Carteret County
and in Maysville, but our primary work revolves around humane population
control via affordable, accessible spay-neuter.
All the money raised goes
to our no-kill shelter, and additional donations are ALWAYS welcome
and needed!
Thank
you for spay-neutering all of your pets &
neighborhood mousers!

We do NOT have public hours, nor does our shelter
take in animals from the public - we get them from high-kill shelters.
Feel free to tell others about our spay-neuter clinic,
but PLEASE don't give out our location to those who may try to abandon
animals here.
We DO prosecute for animal abandonment.

AVAILABLE VACCINES & LAB TESTS
The Kindness Spay-neuter Clinic offers a few basic services when cats
and dogs are neutered, but these services are available -- at our discounted
rates -- only at the time of surgery, not at a later time. (Whenever
possible, they should be obtained at a full-service veterinary hospital
at least 10 days PRIOR to surgery, to minimize surgical risk and better
prime the animals’ immune system.)
These
services are:- FVRCP-C vaccines for cats (included in
surgery price)
(distemper-rhinotracheitis-calici-chlamydia) - DHLPP
vaccines for dogs ($7.00)
(distemper-hepatitis-leptospirosis-parainfluenza-parvo) - rabies vaccines
($7.00)
- FeLV & FIV blood test for cats
($30.00)
(leukemia & feline
immunodeficiency virus) - heartworm test
(dogs) ($18.00)
(and YES - dogs testing negative at our clinic
CAN get up to a year's supply of heartworm preventative! The
cost ranges from $3 to $6 per month); - fecal
exam ($10.00)
(all pets in your household, once a year, to protect
YOU!)
All cats & dogs at the Kindness
Clinic are checked for fleas & ear mites.
MORE ABOUT THE DISEASES
WE WORK TO PREVENT
Of the various diseases
that can be prevented easily in animals, we list below the ones pet
caretakers really don't want to overlook in coastal North
Carolina.
HEARTWORM*:
Spread by mosquitoes, heartworm affects dogs (and, less commonly, cats).
It is DEADLY, CONTAGIOUS, and it can be quite EXPENSIVE to treat. It is much less
expensive to prevent with an easy-to-give once-a-month chewable tablet.
Sadly, many of the dogs coming to our Cedar Island, Stacy and Maysville
heartworm clinics have been positive for this parasite because their
owners never bothered to give one inexpensive monthly pill!
ROUNDWORMS*,
HOOKWORMS*, WHIPWORMS & TAPEWORMS:
These easily-treated parasites are diagnosed via stool samples (fecals).
Out of the seven parasites we routinely look for microscopically, only
two are commonly seen with the naked eye and THREE of these parasites
are contagious to humans. Worming medication is available at our clinic for those animals testing
positive for these parasites.
FLEAS*: Easy
to prevent using modern once-a-month products like Frontline, Advantage
and Revolution, fleas are much harder
(and more expensive) to treat once you’ve got them! Frontline
once-a-month preventative is available at any time at our clinic (refills
okay, too)!
RABIES*:
N.C. law dictates that ALL cats & dogs be vaccinated for this
disease. The first vaccine is good for 1 year; each additional vaccine
may be good for 1-3 years.
DISTEMPER:
Different distemper viruses affect dogs & cats. They are easily
prevented through vaccination (2-3 vaccines per kitten or pup; yearly booster
for adults for several years, then every three years).
(dogs) PARVOVIRUS, HEPATITIS, LEPTOSPIROSIS*
and PARAINFLUENZA: Protection against these diseases is given
at the same time as a dog’s distemper vaccine. Hepatitis is a
disease of the liver. Leptospirosis is contagious and deadly to
humans. Parainfluenza is a form of kennel cough.
(cats)
RHINOTRACHEITIS, CALICIVIRUS and CHLAMYDIA*:
These very common upper-respiratory diseases are prevented when a cat
receives a distemper-combo vaccine. Many blind and half-blind cats are
seen in this area because people have failed to vaccinate for these
diseases.
(cats) FELINE LEUKEMIA
& FELINE IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS: These diseases are spread
by fighting and breeding. Leukemia may also be spread through casual
contact. Vaccination against leukemia is very important if your cat ever
sees other cats - this area of N.C. has MANY leukemia hotspots!
Vaccination against FIV is less important in most cases (beware, too: a
FIV-vaccinated cat will test false-positive on a FIV blood
test!)
*
People can catch these diseases, too.
